Ivecop is a generic brand of ivermectin, a broad-spectrum antiparasitic medication approved for the treatment of infections caused by roundworms, mites and other parasites. It works by binding to parasite glutamate-gated chloride channels, causing paralysis and death of the parasites without affecting human cells. Ivecop tablets are commonly prescribed for conditions such as intestinal strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis (river blindness), scabies and head lice. Unlike some veterinary formulations, Ivecop is formulated for human use.

The usual dose of Ivecop is based on body weight—typically 150–200 micrograms per kilogram taken as a single oral dose with water on an empty stomach. For scabies and lice, a second dose may be administered after one week. Patients should follow their doctor’s instructions carefully and not exceed the recommended dose. Side effects are generally mild and may include dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, or rash. Some people experience a reaction to dying parasites, known as the Mazzotti reaction, which can cause fever, swollen lymph nodes and skin itching. Drinking plenty of fluids and taking the medication with food can help minimise stomach upset.

Ivermectin should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to it or who are taking medications that increase GABA activity, such as benzodiazepines, as this can cause excessive sedation. People with severe liver disease should consult their physician before use. Ivecop is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women unless specifically prescribed by a healthcare provider, as the safety has not been firmly established. Use of ivermectin for conditions other than those approved should be avoided, and it should never be used in lieu of vaccines or as an antiviral.
