Doxycycline 100 mg is a widely prescribed broad-spectrum antibiotic from the tetracycline family that treats numerous bacterial and atypical infections. This versatile medication inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, making it effective for respiratory tract infections like pneumonia, sinusitis and bronchitis; skin infections including acne and rosacea; urinary tract infections; sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea and syphilis; and vector-borne illnesses like Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, scrub typhus and leptospirosis. Doctors also use doxycycline to prevent malaria in travellers to endemic regions and as part of combination therapy for anthrax or plague.

When taking Doxycycline 100mg, follow your healthcare provider’s instructions carefully. Swallow each tablet with a full glass of water and remain upright for at least 30 minutes to avoid oesophageal irritation. It can be taken with or without food, but avoid simultaneous intake with dairy products, antacids or supplements containing iron, aluminium, calcium or magnesium, as these minerals bind doxycycline and reduce its absorption. If you are using it for malaria prophylaxis, start one to two days before travel, continue daily during travel and for four weeks after leaving the area.

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and increased sensitivity to sunlight, which can lead to sunburn. Rarely, doxycycline may cause oesophagitis, headaches, blurred vision or intracranial hypertension. To minimize these risks, drink plenty of fluids, avoid lying down immediately after dosing and wear sunscreen or protective clothing outdoors. Doxycycline can decrease the effectiveness of oral contraceptives and interact with blood thinners like warfarin. It should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding or given to children under eight years old due to potential effects on tooth and bone development. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve early to prevent relapse and antibiotic resistance.
