I’m hoping to get some advice or hear if anyone else has dealt with this. I recently received a very official-looking letter from the law firm Mendelson Schwarz, threatening a lawsuit over an old debt. The problem is, I don’t even recognize the account they are referencing, and the amount seems inflated.

I’m honestly panicking a little. I know ignoring a summons can lead to a judgment, wage garnishment, or even a frozen bank account, which I absolutely cannot afford. I’ve read that you should request a debt validation letter to force them to prove the debt is valid, but I’m not sure of the best way to do that or what to do if they just ignore my request.

Has anyone successfully fought a threat from this firm? Did you have to hire a lawyer, or were you able to handle it yourself? I’m trying to figure out my next steps and avoid making a costly mistake. Any shared experiences or tips would be really helpful right now. Thanks.
